DJ PQ's New Year's Resolution Motivation: Parlour Jams!
It's 2014 ladies and we're back with a fresh Parlour Jams! mix to encourage your new year's resolutions. Was your goal to hit the gym, maybe get those finances together or find a lover that doesn't treat you like Being Mary Jane? Whatever your aim, DJ PQ's blend of gems will spur you on toward success. From hip-hop and dance to afrobeat and R&B, I'm body rolling in front of my laptop and you will be too. Don't fight it, girls. DJ PQ, aka Philip Quinaz, is one of New York's resident mixers who really feels today's problems could be solved with a bagel, a good, tasty bagel. The Miami born man is a tall drink of water with roots in Portugal and a deep love for his craft as well as white tees. What's not to like?Listen to PQ’s Parlour Jams! blend and learn more about the man behinds the wheels below. Catch him at the Revival party this Saturday at Brooklyn's Free Candy or at the hip watering hole, Franklin Park. *shimmies* Born and raised? The Miami Shores, Dade County. How did you start spinning?I was in a band in middle school and we just played Red Hot Chili Peppers covers. I was falling in love with hip hop at the time and my parents had a pretty amazing record collection. It became clear that DJ-ing would be my path to playing all kinds of music and I caught the bug in seventh grade. I haven't stopped since.Favorite song to play at the height of the party? That's a toughie and it really depends on the party. I've been rinsing that James Brown "Hot Pants (DJ Smash Edit)" pretty heavily for the last year at Revival with Rich Medina. My other regular spot Franklin Park in Crown Heights is all about those DJ Mustard 100 bpm ratchet vibes. What did you want to be when you were little?A rock collector, a tennis player, Pete Sampras, Bo Jackson and Michael Jordan. In that order.Who are you DJ idols?Ron Hardy, Larry Levan, Kenny Dope, Jazzy Jeff and DJ AM. Among my peers, Mr. Brown, Rich Medina, Jayceeoh and Cosmo Baker.Who is the most interesting person in the world? My mom is a pretty interesting lady, she's very emotional. What’s your favorite country to visit?Portugal, it's where my dad is from and it's really beautiful there. What’s your favorite saying? We got this. What piece of clothing do you wear everyday?I've got a favorite pair of black jeans and I'm heavy on the white tee front. Maybe a little too heavy. I'm not really into rocking other people's logos although I do like Ralph Lauren because that brand's got a nice fit. Come to think of it, I could use an upgrade on the clothing front. Please send me gear, thanks management. What’s the last thing you bought to wear? Some classic navy blue Vans, a chambray oxford, and a pair of jeans from LL Bean (one of the few brands that carries a 38x36). Us Big n' Tall folks get no love on the clothing front, you have to look hard and pay a grip.Favorite guilty pleasure?Movies, TV and bagels. I love bagels.Favorite movie?Breakup At A Wedding, look it up.Five favorite songs? That's too hard a question, I'm too moody to have five favorites. What’s your definition of a good day?A good breakfast, a bagel maybe, and sunshine. I invoice a bunch of people and then I head to the beach with a good book and a playlist for the ride. Later, I'd have dinner, watch a movie and, provided there is no traffic, that's a good day.Know a Parlour-worthy DJ, email me at hillary@parlourmagazine.com!
